IT WAS a moment that delighted Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman — when the actor who plays the drug lord in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico turned up to watch his trial.
Guzman (below) smiled and waved at Alejandro Edda when the actor was pointed out to him in a New York court room. Edda later told reporters: ‘It was a very surreal moment, I have to be honest.’
Guzman has been on trial since November accused of running the Mexican Sinaloa cartel which shipped drugs into the US. His joy at seeing Edda was explained by witnesses who have said he often spoke of his wish to be portrayed on film.
Guzman faces life in prison but yesterday declined to give evidence in his own defence. He was caught in 2015 but escaped through a tunnel dug under his cell. He was recaptured and sent to the US in 2017.
Jurors are set to start their deliberations tomorrow.
