THE Duchess of Sussex made it a ‘bring your mother to work day’ when Doria Ragland was the surprise guest at a royal engagement yesterday.
Introducing herself to guests as ‘Meg’s mom’, Ms Ragland joined her daughter and son-in-law Prince Harry at the launch of Together, the Grenfell community cookbook.
Her last memorable appearance was at the royal wedding in May. Now, in London for a few days, she is said to be planning a move to the capital from the US to be close to her daughter.
Yesterday, Ms Ragland, 62, joined a celebration of the book, in a marquee near Kensington Palace, and said she was ‘head over heels’ with pride.
Meghan was the driving force behind Together, which she suggested to a group of women who came together to cook at a Muslim centre in North Kensington in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower blaze.
She marked the occasion by giving her first public speech as a duchess, saying: ‘Working on this project for the past nine months has been a tremendous labour of love.’
The duchess, 37, who had visited the cooks privately, added: ‘I feel so proud to live in a city that can have so much diversity — 12 countries represented in this one group of women.’
Wearing a Tuxe top, a skirt by Misha Nonoo and a coat by Smythe, she soon got stuck in — under her mum’s watchful gaze — dishing up rice, flipping chapatis and turning kofta kebabs.
Zahira Ghaswala, who hosted Meghan’s first visit to the kitchen, said reaction to the book was ‘positive’.
