THE MCC is backing five-day Tests in the wake of recent talk of the format being shortened to four.
The ICC has raised the idea of Tests losing a day but following England’s thrilling fifth-day win over South Africa in Cape Town (pictured), cricket’s lawmakers have laid out their stance on the sport’s future.
A statement read: ‘MCC has noted the recent discussion regarding the future of Test cricket and the ICC’s desire to debate the introduction of four-day games to replace the current five-day format in the World Test Championship from 2023.
‘The MCC Cricket committee and MCC World Cricket committee recently discussed the issue and although they can see some benefits four-day Test cricket could bring, both believe Test cricket should continue to be played over five days.’
England’s Ben Stokes and Joe Root had already called for Tests to retain their five-day format.
