Matt Lucas so ‘chuffed’ by his starring roll on Great British Bake Off

HE MAY have big choux to fill, but Matt Lucas is looking forward to replacing Sandi Toksvig on The Great British Bake Off.

The former Little Britain star — who when playing the character of Marjorie Dawes had the catchphrase ‘I just love cake’ — will host the show alongside Noel Fielding.

Lucas, 46, said yesterday: ‘I’m chuffed to bits to be joining the most delicious show on television and bearing in mind my love of cake, I’ve already ordered some much larger trousers in anticipation.’

He shared a photo of Fatfighters’ Marjorie Dawes holding a plate of buns, cakes and biscuits, while the Channel 4 show’s Twitter account shared a video of Fielding introducing his new co-host to the GBBO tent. Bake Off judge Prue Leith said: ‘The combination of Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding — will we stop laughing and get any filming done?’

Fondant farewell: Former host Sandi Toksvig

Fielding added: ‘I love Matt. I love his warmth and his comedy and his big joyful smile.’ Jo Brand, Nadiya Hussain and Sarah Millican were among the bookies’ favourites to replace Toksvig, 61, who announced in January she was leaving to pursue other projects.

One fan tweeted a gif of Lucas as Marjorie talking about cake, saying: ‘If Matt Lucas doesn’t do this on Bake Off then what’s the point?!’
