A COUPLE scammed almost £40,000 of disability benefits — despite the husband managing to run two marathons.

Graham and April Totterdell, who owned two houses and had hefty savings, were jailed for the ‘breathtaking rip-off’.

A judge branded April, 48, ‘a liar of epic proportions’ after she claimed at her trial that her husband bullied her into taking part in the fraud.

Graham Totterdell, 72, was awarded the highest-rate disability living allowance after the couple said he could barely walk and was a ‘frail old man’, Canterbury crown court heard.

Judge James O’Mahony jailed April for 18 months and Graham, who admitted fraud at an earlier hearing, for 14 months. The pair, from Dover, also face proceedings for the recovery of the £38,491 benefits.
