DON’T be scared! It’s only Mackenzie Crook — seen for the first time in his new role as Worzel Gummidge.

The 47-year-old, star of The Office and Detectorists, plays the much-loved scarecrow in two hour-long films on BBC One.

Crook (pictured) also writes and directs the show, inspired by the books of Barbara Euphan Todd and made famous by Jon Pertwee in the 1970s ITV series. Other stars have not yet been named.

Crook said he hoped to bring the turnip-headed bird-scarer to ‘a new generation of viewers and reintroduce him to old friends’.

‘I’ve completely fallen for her charming, irreverent scarecrow. Fingers crossed for a glorious English summer as we head out to Scatterbrook Farm and Worzel’s Ten Acre Field,’ he added.
