Lottery winners celebrate with a giant bubbly bottle in the grass

Let’s get fizz-ical: The champagne bottle, flying cork and flute cut by Mr Maddox PICTURE: PA

A COUPLE who won £3million on the lottery didn’t let the grass grow under them — they mowed a giant champagne bottle into the lawn.

Sue Richards, 51, and Barry Maddox 58, decided on the lawn art as they continue celebrating their 2016 scratch card win. Green-fingered Mr Maddox cut the design in three days, with the help of a man nicknamed ‘Mr Lawn’, after being challenged by friends.

They used three types of mower and various sizes of scissors to create the champagne bottle with a popping cork, and fizz pouring into two champagne flutes.

‘It’s bigger than what I expected but it’s amazing,’ said Ms Richards. ‘It’s come out really nice. Neighbours can see it as we’re in a converted bungalow and there are two-storey houses next door.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if the neighbours beyond that have seen it.’

The former care worker bought her winning scratch card after a night shift, and the couple have since splashed out on cars, a motorhome and luxury holidays.

Corking idea: Barry Maddox and Sue Richards

She said neighbours in Billericay, Essex, were ‘intrigued’ by the lawn.

Mr Maddox’s previous efforts include Wimbledon stripes and a chequerboard design. ‘The neighbours must think we are mad but I’ve always taken a lot of pride in my garden and this has been really fun,’ he said.

‘Who knows, maybe we’ve created a trend for the summer, lawn-Moëting.’
