ENTREPRENEUR and TV star Lord Sugar has urged No.10 to lift lockdown restrictions — because he knows no one who has died from coronavirus.
The Apprentice star, who has been in Florida with his wife during lockdown, told the Jeremy Vine On 5 show that Britain should ‘follow the example of the US, France and Spain’, which have all reopened restaurants and cafes.
‘Look, I’m not a doctor and don’t want to be giving medical advice,’ the 73-year-old said. ‘I have been in Florida for six months, so I have lived through the crisis, the shortage of ventilators, the no masks, hospital beds being full up… blah, blah, blah.
‘I have now seen the transition of restaurants, tennis courts, golf clubs opening. This has been going on now for six weeks, so I logically say, “Hold on. We’ve come out of this so-called lockdown. Who’s dead?” I’m still alive. My wife, thank God, is still alive. So is everybody else I know. It’s a clue that maybe we’ve reached a peak.’
He also suggested that Boris Johnson was being ‘cautious’ after needing hospital treatment when he contracted Covid-19 in March. But social media users slammed his comments. One tweeted: ‘Perhaps if you had lost a loved one you wouldn’t be so free with your crass comments.’ Another posted: ‘Who’s dead? 42k plus people have died! How tone deaf are you?’
The official death toll in the United States is 119,674.
