Luton 0-3 Man Utd
JUAN MATA’S penalty plus late goals from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood got Manchester United’s season up and running with a 3-0 Carabao Cup win at Luton.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said before the game he felt some of his stars were still in pre-season mode, having started their league season with a 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, and they laboured for long spells at Kenilworth Road.
Donny van de Beek, who scored against Palace after coming off the bench, was among ten changes, along with goalkeeper Dean Henderson but Luton held their own until Mata broke the deadlock just before half-time.The Spaniard beat Luton goalkeeper James Shea from the spot after Brandon Williams had been brought down by George Moncur.
Henderson came to United’s rescue ten minutes from time, clawing out a header from Tom Lockyer whose follow-up was cleared off the line.
But substitutes Rashford and Greenwood provided superb finishes in the dying stages to put a gloss on United’s victory and book a fourth-round trip to Preston or Brighton.
