A LABOUR MP has been accused of racism over an online post in which she labelled a black Conservative politician a ‘token ghetto boy’.
Emma Dent Coad (below) also mocked Shaun Bailey for ‘trying hard to fit in’ by being photographed with then-Tory leader David Cameron.
The 2010 blog by Ms Dent Coad, who was elected MP for Kensington in June, surfaced again yesterday on the Guido Fawkes website.
In her piece, she claimed Mr Bailey — then standing for parliament in west London — had ‘stigmatised’ the Ladbroke Grove area he was born in by calling it a ‘ghetto’. She added: ‘Who can say where this man will ever fit in? One day he is the “token ghetto boy” standing behind D Cameron, the next “looking interested” beside G Osborne. Ever felt used?’
London Assembly member Mr Bailey said he never used ‘ghetto’ to disparage Ladbroke Grove and was saddened by the ‘hate-filled’ blog. ‘During my time in politics I have dealt with attacks from hard-line groups, including the BNP, but not once have I been labelled a “token ghetto boy”,’ he added. Ms Dent Coad’s spokesman said: ‘As is clear from the original post, Emma was quoting Bailey’s own comments.’
