Labour defector Angela Smith: I deserve £22k if I lose my fight for seat

A LABOUR defector has claimed she is being ‘discriminated against’ after discovering she is ineligible for the £22,000 compensation given to MPs who face election defeat.

Angela Smith (pictured) would land the payout — two months of salary plus funds for winding down offices — if she lost a fight to keep her Penistone and Stocksbridge seat.

But because her new party the Lib Dems already has a candidate there, she is standing in Altrincham and Sale West.

The Jeremy Corbyn critic told parliament’s expenses watchdog she had ‘no option’ but to defect.

‘I cannot underestimate [sic] my horror in finding these payments are only available if you stand in the same seat. To be honest it is terrifying me,’ she wrote.
