THE condemnation of the Ballon d’Or twerk comment directed at Norway star Ada Hegerberg will help grow women’s football, according to Wales manager Jayne Ludlow.
Lyon striker Hegerberg became the first winner of the women’s Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday, but the ceremony was overshadowed when co-host Martin Solveig asked the 23-year-old if she could twerk.
The Norwegian abruptly replied ‘no’ and Solveig — who later apologised — was fiercely criticised for his remark, while France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe’s apparently unimpressed reaction to the host’s quip was caught on camera.
‘His (Mbappe’s) reaction was great, better than any promotional campaign football can have,’ said Ludlow, a nine-time league winner.
‘You’ve got a top-level guy saying, “Hey, that’s out of order. You need to respect this woman because she’s a superstar”.
‘Top-level guys recognised it was not acceptable and that support will grow our game more than anything. The response has been fantastic.’
