BRAZIL’S president Jair Bolsonaro has been bitten by an emu-like bird while in quarantine at the presidential palace.
The South American bird, a rhea, ‘pecked’ at the president when he tried to feed it during a stroll around the palace grounds in Brasília.
The far-right populist leader (pictured), who had previously dismissed Covid-19 as a ‘little flu’, has been self-isolating since testing postitive for it earlier this month. Wearing a mask, the 65-year-old was seen attempting to feed a flock of the flightless rheas, then sharply pulling back his hand. ‘Interacting with the animals has been one of Bolsonaro’s distractions,’ reported the Estadao newspaper.
His opponents were quick to seize on the incident. ‘Even the animals recognise when someone is pernicious,’ tweeted journalist Solange Mateus.
