A GANG leader who tried to escape prison dressed as his daughter has been found dead in his cell.
Clauvino da Silva apparently hanged himself with a sheet, prison authorities in Rio de Janeiro said yesterday.
The 42-year-old had been caught trying to head out of the Brazilian prison at the weekend wearing a female silicon mask, long dark-haired wig, tight jeans and a pink T-shirt.
Officials said he managed to reach the exit doors of the prison west of Rio, but his nervousness caught the attention of security guards.
He was trying to pass as his 19-year-old daughter, who was visiting him that day.
Da Silva, known as Shorty, was part of the leadership of one of the most powerful criminal groups in the country.
An investigation has been launched into his death.
