It’s St Davids v Goliaths as tiny city eyes culture prize

BRITAIN’S smallest city, St Davids, has staked its claim to be named the UK City of Culture for 2021.

The Welsh minnow — population 1,800 — will vie with ten locations, including Coventry, Portsmouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Sunderland, for the money-spinning title.

Bids were submitted yesterday, with the last resting place of Wales’s patron saint — a city since 1994 — springing the biggest surprise.

Mayor Chris Taylor said: ‘This would put St Davids on the map in a way we never have been before.’

Bookies made it fourth favourite, at 6/1, with Perth installed as 3/1 favourite by Ladbrokes. The other contenders are Hereford, Paisley, Swansea, Warrington and Wells.

The successor to Hull this year will be announced in December.
