Brit nominees on their award memories: It’s a right old song and dance

Nostalgic: One of Jax Jones’s first memories of the Brits was The Spice Girls PICTURE: GETTY

Jax Jones, nominated for British Artist Video Of The Year

What’s your first Brits memory?

The Spice Girls — I was 11. It was the year Geri wore the Union Jack dress. My favourite song was Say You’ll Be There — the video was sick. I read the Mel B autobiography over Christmas. She’s been through a lot. I was reading that and watching the R Kelly documentary so it was a heavy few days. My dad used to love all the Eddie Murphy films so reading about Mel B’s relationship with him, you don’t expect them to have those sorts of issues. I hope she finds love.

Who else would you like to win on the night?

My collaborator Mabel. She’s nominated for Breakthrough and she’s got a hit at the moment with Don’t Call Me Up. When we first met we had a two-day writing session and the first day she didn’t say anything or sing one note. The second day we wrote Ring Ring, which got to number 12. She said she was quiet because she takes her time to get to know someone. Now I can’t shut her up.

Who should have got a nomination but didn’t?

Dance music is under-represented. I know Calvin Harris is nominated but he should have been nominated for British Male. He’s had One Kiss, the Sam Smith single Promises and a massive album the year before.

Where will you put your Brit if you win?

In my front room alongside my other awards. I’ve got a Grammy medal from when I was nominated in 2014. I framed it in one of the medal boxes you get when you do the marathon. I’ve got my Number One trophy for I Got You and an MTV nomination award. Awards are based on music you have done so they make you want to get another one.

How will you be celebrating or commiserating?

I’m finishing my new album so I’ll be going straight back to the studio. I’ll be there for the dinner and to cheer everyone on but I’ll be coming back afterwards. I’ve never had any free stuff when I’ve gone to the parties. I don’t think they put my name down. One year I was nominated for two Brits and I didn’t even get an invite.

What’s your first Brits memory?

One of the most memorable moments was when James Corden cut Adele off in 2012. I remember seeing other people win the Breakthrough category in previous years — I remember the year Adele was nominated but Duffy won. And Stormzy’s performance last year was very memorable, with the rain and the shout-out to Grenfell.

Who else do you want to win on the night?

Dua Lipa’s going to clean up — she did well at the Grammys. I’ve met Anne-Marie over the years and I’ve worked with Rudimental a lot this year and they’re in the British Single category with me so I know how much it would mean to them.

Who should have got a nomination but didn’t?

It’s been good this year — I know George Ezra is up for a few and Lewis Capaldi was nominated. So even people starting out have been nominated this year.

A sure thing: Tom Walker reckons Dua Lipa will clean up PICTURE: GETTY

In the toilet so when people visit they can say, ‘Ooh he’s got a Brit.’ It’s nerve-wracking when you walk into a studio and the place is full of awards. If you know they’ve sold millions of albums you think, ‘Will they listen to me?’ But it’s good to work with people who are further ahead than you as it brings you along as an artist.

How will you be celebrating or commiserating after the do?

I won’t be commiserating — I’m buzzing just to go to the Brits. I’ll be going to some of the label after-parties. The Sony one is always really cool and you get amazing goodie bags. I’ve just been using the free shoe polish kit I got last year. It’s all about the music obviously. The free stuff is just a bonus.

Amir Amor from Rudimental, nominated for British Single and British Artist Video Of The Year

What’s your first Brits memory?

The KLF doing that heavy rock version of their hit when they fired guns and then left a dead sheep at the after-party.

Who else do you want to win on the night?

Anne-Marie is signed to our label and I reckon she’ll win something — she has put in so much hard work and it’s really flying for her. We’re all going to be there together. We always knew she was a talent and now, after a couple of years of development and touring, she’s going to be a superstar.

Who should have got a nomination but didn’t?

Maverick Sabre. He’s been around for a few years and he’s overlooked. He has so much emotion and so much to say. It’s about time people paid attention to his music.

Where will you put your Brit if you win?

In my house. I had other awards in one place but thought it looked a bit show-offy so now there’s an award by the toaster and a Brit by the staircase.

How will you be celebrating or commiserating?

Last year we had a massive label party on a boat. I was at the door and this woman was saying, ‘I love your music.’ Someone told me it was Kate Moss so I let her in. We have a lot of label parties. Maybe we’ll have an impromptu one at the studio.

The Brit Awards take place tomorrow night at The O2 Arena, London hosted by Jack Whitehall. It is live on ITV from 8pm. Tom Odell plays Omeara on Friday as part of War Child Brits Week, britsweekwarchild.co.uk
