MEMBERS of former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi’s party gathered in Rome to protest against a controversial budget.

The Italian Democratic Party say the populist government is trying to ram through the bill without a debate, despite complaints it was written by Brussels. Italy redrafted its original budget and cut the deficit to 2.04 per cent of the economy after the European Commission rejected a target of 2.4 per cent which it said broke EU rules.

On Saturday, the government won a vote on the bill — just before an end of year deadline.
