Who’s this, then?
An electronically inclined, leftfield-jazz sextet featuring members of London’s young breakout stars Ezra Collective, spiritual Afro-jazz outfit Maisha and fusion duo Sawa Manga.
What’s their story?
A youthful, high-energy and boundary-busting renaissance has recently been shaking up the London jazz scene, and Cykada are part of it. Drummer Tim Doyle and beats programmer Tilé Gigichi-Lipere are the dynamic core, and in the early days worked together with bass player Jamie Benzies, jamming with different musicians until they hit on the current line-up. They use both improv and composition to make their tracks.
What do they sound like?
Better heard than described, but… a spirited, wild and joyful mix of deep jazz grooves, global beats (notably from West Africa) and spacey, raw electronics, featuring both saxophone and trumpet and with a love of LA’s experimental beats community — especially Brainfeeder mavericks like Flying Lotus — running through it.
Point me to their best tracks…
You’ll have to take our word for it and just plunge into one of their live videos on YouTube. Last October’s Jazz re:freshed session is a fine, fiery place to start.
