Who’s this, then?
An instrumental, math-rock duo (pictured) originally from San Francisco: guitarist Nate Sherman (now based in LA) and drummer Ty Mayer. Not to be confused with Florist, Flowers or Flora.
What is their story?
After Nate and Ty’s band Parent Guardian dissolved, the duo worked independently for a while before starting
Floral in 2013. Nate’s tastes ran to metal and heavy punk, but around the time he started messing about with alternative guitar tunings (which he still uses), Ty turned him on to math rock and that determined the new duo’s direction. They’ve released just two EPs – one in 2014, the other in 2015. Ty also records and performs as Winery, while Nate makes his own electronic music on the side.
What do they sound like?
Exhilaratingly intricate and trippy, with loads of dazzling tempo switches and faint notes of jazz. Their tracks are light, brightly coloured and properly joyful, rather than academic and show off-ish.
Point me to their best tracks…
Just dive in anywhere and you’ll be rewarded, but the soulful Picture Of Flower (from the first EP) and sweetly hectic Marsh Petition (off the second) are especially strong.
