Instagram’s plan… to make hackers not too ’appy

INSTAGRAM is testing new tools to make it easier to reclaim accounts that have been hacked.

The social media app will give users the option to input other types of account information, such as an email address or phone number, if they select ‘need more help’ or are spotted struggling on the log-in screen — as this could be because a hacker changed the password.

The new tool is a result of user feedback, Instagram said.

The Facebook-owned site, with more than 1billion active monthly users, also announced a way to protect usernames.

After a name is changed — whether by a hacker or just by the user — there will be a time lock to stop it being claimed by someone else. The feature, already on Android, is being rolled out for Apple iOS users.
