I may not be millionaire’s son but he’s still dad to me

A STUDENT who found out that the millionaire who brought him up is not his real father has said he will always consider him to be his dad — even though he refuses to speak to him.

Joel Mason also revealed he remains on good terms with his mother Kate, 54, who had an affair during her 20-year marriage to Richard, 55, co-founder of the MoneySupermarket website.

DNA tests confirmed Mr Mason was not the father of Joel and twin Ed, 19, or their elder brother Willem, 23, after the businessman discovered in 2016 he had been infertile since birth.

Mrs Mason has admitted the on-off affair with a Barclays Bank colleague but said they always used a condom and declined to reveal his identity.

Joel, the first of the brothers to speak out after the tangled story emerged at the weekend, told MailOnline: ‘I’ve not fallen out with mum over this. We’re all OK. She had just had an unhappy marriage and she wanted kids.’

Mr Mason, from Rhos, north Wales, discovered he wasn’t a father when doctors told him he had genetic lung condition cystic fibrosis, which leaves male sufferers infertile.

Secret affair: Kate Mason in 2006, at about the time she and Richard divorced

He is now only in touch with one of the brothers, Ed, after causing upset by suing his ex over her deception.

Mrs Mason, from Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, agreed to repay £250,000 of the £4million she was handed when they divorced 13 years ago.

Joel, who is studying property at Nottingham university, said: ‘I haven’t been speaking to him for a number of years because of his behaviour.

‘He’s a very manipulative man, not the kind of person you want to be with. I started noticing this when I was 15. But he’s still my dad and I’m not going to look for my real one.’

He said he had never tried to find out his father’s identity from Mrs Mason, who met a new partner after her divorce but split from him recently.

The DNA results ‘didn’t hurt me because Richard hadn’t been my dad for a few years’, Joel said, adding: ‘I felt nothing. It didn’t really matter.’
