A BRITISH base jumper has died in Italy after losing control of his wingsuit during a jump from a peak in the Dolomites.

Jean Andre Quemener jumped from 9,800ft in Canazei, north of Venice. Reports said the 32-year-old, from St Helier, Jersey, struck the rock face during high winds before falling more than 650ft.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with local authorities.

The extreme sport entails leaping and gliding from a height then parachuting down.

Last year, Robert Haggarty, of Andover, Hampshire, died jumping from Castelletto Della Busazza in the Dolomites. The 47-year-old had failed to clear a cliff ledge.
