Hammer attacker is shot by police at Notre Dame

Terror: Police outside Notre Dame

AN Algerian student was shot and wounded after attacking a police officer with a hammer outside Notre Dame in Paris yesterday.

The attacker shouted ‘This is for Syria!’ as he landed a blow before another officer opened fire. Two shots were heard as the man fell to the ground in the cathedral square in front of hundreds of tourists.

Lockdown: Visitors inside the cathedral were made to sit and raise their hands

French police said the man — who is in his 40s — was also carrying two kitchen knives and was identified from a student card in his pocket. Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said he was ‘believed to be acting alone’ and used ‘rudimentary items to attack the forces of law and order’. Anti-terrorist prosecutors have opened an inquiry.

The officer suffered minor injuries and the attacker was shot in the chest, according to a source. Around 900 people inside the cathedral were made to sit on pews with their hands up as police investigated. France remains on high alert after recent terror attacks.
