Gongs for Taylor Swift and Jonas Brothers in Teen Choice Awards

TAYLOR SWIFT and the Jonas Brothers lifted trophies at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards.

Swift (above) won the first-ever icon award in the ceremony voted for by fans of 13-plus, and used her acceptance speech to call for gender equality and announce the release date of a new single.

The 29-year-old was introduced to the stage by Alex Morgan, who won the World Cup with the US women’s football team last month.

Swift backed the team in their campaign for equal pay with the men’s side and told fans: ‘Please, please, please support her and her teammates because this isn’t over yet. It’s not resolved.’

She told viewers to ‘get online’ and discuss the issue, adding: ‘Let people know how you feel about it because what happened to them is unfair. It’s happening everywhere and they are heroes and icons for standing up.’

Swift also told fans to ‘stand up for yourself’, days after Kid Rock was widely condemned for a ‘sexist tweet’ claiming the pop star was only supporting left-leaning causes to further her career in Hollywood.

She then announced the release date for the next single from her upcoming album. Title track Lover will arrive on August 16, a week before the album.

Other big winners on the night included the Jonas Brothers, who closed out the show after taking the decade award.

Kevin, Joe and Nick took to the stage to accept the prize, which organisers said celebrates their development over the past 10 years.

The band formed in 2005 and earned worldwide fame after appearing on the Disney Channel. They split in 2013 but got back together in March with the number one single Sucker.

Kevin, 31, and Nick, 26, said they were both bullied in school for traits that would later make them famous and told fans on Hermosa Beach, California, to ’embrace those things’ that made them special.

Robert Downey Jr won best action film actor for his role as Tony Stark, Iron Man, while Avengers: Endgame was action movie of the year.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello won best song for their UK number one Senorita. The rumoured couple were not at the ceremony but Mendes thanked fans by video.

Noah Centineo took best comedy actor for The Perfect Date and Zendaya best summer movie actress for MJ in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Riverdale won drama TV show, while performers on the night included Mable, OneRepublic and Monsta X.
