‘Furious’ Prince Philip leaves as the royals gather for showdown

ONE person not at yesterday’s summit was Prince Philip, who was photographed leaving the Sandringham estate less than an hour before Harry arrived.

The famously combative Duke of Edinburgh was said to have reacted furiously to Harry and Meghan’s announcement about stepping back from royal duties last week, yelling to an aide: ‘What the hell are they playing at?’

A source told The Sun: ‘A lot of Philip’s anger comes from seeing Her Majesty upset. To say that the duke feels let down would be a considerable understatement. He is deeply hurt. He was spitting blood when aides informed him what had happened and has left the Queen in absolutely no doubt about how he feels.’

The 98-year-old, who is said to be close to Harry, has his own rooms at the Norfolk estate but has spent much of his time at a cottage in the grounds. He was chauffeured away in a Land Rover yesterday. He has not driven on public roads since his car overturned at an estate entrance last January.

The duke retired from public duties in 2017 and had a hip replacement operation in April 2018 — but was still at Harry and Meghan’s wedding that May.
