Freedom over five days of Christmas could come at a cost

THE price of a five-day window for family Christmas celebrations could be a further 25 days of tough restrictions, Public Health England warned yesterday.

The agency’s Dr Susan Hopkins initially told a press conference that two days of harsh measures would be needed for every day of festive jollity. But PHE later clarified that she meant five.

Restrictions would be needed before and after the relaxation. ‘Coming into Christmas we need to be very careful,’ Dr Hopkins said.

There has been speculation that Boris Johnson wants to allow a five-day window. No.10 said: ‘We are looking at ways for families to spend time together over Christmas at the end of an incredibly difficult year.’
