MOTORISTS are being warned to prepare for Frantic Friday as millions of drivers hit the road for their summer getaway today.
It came after drivers were stuck in a ten-mile queue on the M11, near the junction with the M25 in Harlow, Essex, after an accident forced the motorway to be closed in both directions for four hours.
Police, fire engines and an air ambulance were called to the scene.
Department for Transport figures show August is the busiest month on the roads and Friday is the busiest day for traffic. More cars also break down at this time.
However, just 57 per cent of drivers take less than 20 minutes to prepare for a long journey, Swinton Insurance finds. Basic checks include making sure you have enough fuel, engine oil, washer fluid and coolant.
Tyres should also be checked using a pressure gauge. Swinton’s Mike McGrail said: ‘A car breakdown is always a pain to have to deal with but, if you’re on a staycation, it could ruin your holiday.
‘No one wants to waste time waiting for help at the side of the road, so a few checks before you set off to make sure your car is ready for a long trip is a really good idea.’
