FORMER Arsenal striker Benik Afobe has been left ‘devastated and heartbroken’ after his two-year-old daughter died from a severe infection.
Little Amora Afobe, who was the DR Congo international’s first child with wife Lois Smith, passed away on Friday night with her family at her bedside.
‘Amora was taken to hospital for treatment after unexpectedly developing a severe infection,’ a statement said.
‘Unfortunately, she then suffered a number of serious complications and, despite doctors doing absolutely everything that they could, Amora passed away peacefully with the love of her family by her side.
‘The entire family have been left totally devastated and heartbroken, and would like to ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.’
Afobe celebrated Wolves being promoted to the Premier League in 2018 by taking Amora on to the pitch and planting a kiss on her cheek.
His former club were to quick to voice their support on Twitter, saying: ‘Our hearts break for Benik.’ And Jack Wilshere, whom Afobe has described as his ‘best mate in football’, added: ‘Benik, my brother, my words will never mean enough to express how deeply sorry I am for your loss, and I know that no words will heal the pain in your hearts right now, just know I am here for you.’
