Fitness: Have a ball as you manage anger

I SWING a giant hammer above my head and smash it down on a huge tyre at my feet. ‘MORE!’ roars my instructor. ‘Come on, what’s f***ed you off this week?!’

I’ve come to Gymbox, the innovative chain behind a whole range of weird and wonderful fitness sessions, to sample its new Anger Management class.

Promising ‘45 minutes of sweat-drenching frustration release’, it taps into an ‘emotive’ fitness-class trend that’s set to get big in 2019.

Work anxiety and a bout of PMT mean I’m feeling pretty disgruntled when I arrive, though not exactly furious. But after a daunting burpee bleep test, we split into pairs for the proper, angry workout — an intense circuit of 12 stations, which we do three times.

Many of the exercises — from smacking heavy balls to the floor to flipping a giant (and extremely heavy) tyre — are deeply satisfying stress-relievers. In between come more familiar HIIT segments. It’s brilliant, gratifying and exhausting fun, particularly as the soundtrack to my teenage angst — Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park — is blaring.

So if you’re dealing with everyday ire, you might find it surprisingly helpful to beat the crap out of an old wheel.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be too exhausted to feel stressed the next day — and struggle to raise your arms.

Available at various London Gymbox locations, day passes £20, class membership from £71 per month,
