A SPORTS enthusiast is helping his neighbours keep fit — with doorstep workouts using tins of beans, brooms, kitchen utensils and pot noodles.

Simon Garner, 43, launched his ‘On Your Step’ aerobics classes following the government coronavirus lockdown and social distancing measures.

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, young and old alike join in 30 minutes of exercise to Mary Poppins’ Chim Chim Cher-ee, The Fraggles’ Fraggle Rock, Sister Sledge’s We Are Family, Salt-N-Pepa’s Push It and Britney Spears’ Toxic.

The creative director, of Kennington, south London, said: ‘I am so lucky I live in an old Georgian square with 40 other houses. There are so many characters and our doorsteps are just over two metres apart, so it’s perfect.

‘We have people with OBEs, we have a lady who was married to a politician, we have a group of students who hang out their window to join in and we have lots of families, all taking part.’

Simon said his routines have brought a new-found community spirit to the square. He added: ‘It is not meant to be strenuous but joyful. It is all good fun and it’s bringing a smile to people’s faces.’
