Fast broadband helps sell houses. Metro looks at some of London’s best-connected homes on the market

WHEN it comes to finding somewhere to live, our priorities are changing. While location, size, outside space and parking remain top considerations, home movers are increasingly tempted by the lure of fast broadband speeds. According to new research by UK full-fibre broadband provider Hyperoptic, 40 per cent of Brits have rejected areas with poor broadband and nearly two-thirds would be put off by a home with slow wi-fi.

For many, digital connectivity is even more important than local amenities. Thirty per cent of home owners and renters polled want to be close to a station, yet a staggering 86 per cent claimed that a decent internet speed is all-important.

The survey also found that 40 per cent of movers think there isn’t enough information available on the quality and speed of internet services in potential new homes. Three in five would like to see a traffic light system introduced to explain broadband speeds when house hunting, similar to an energy performance certificate.

‘Brits rely on the internet so much nowadays for everything from entertainment to keeping in touch, and the rise in numbers working from home is likely to have had an influence on home-movers’ needs,’ says Charles Davies, MD Internet Service Provider for Hyperoptic. ‘With wi-fi on the same list of priorities as parking and garden sizes, developers need to consider how they plan to address this fundamental shift. And it’s clear that consumers want more information around home broadband connectivity — a transparent performance certificate would go a long way towards helping them know what kind of upload and download speeds available providers deliver.’
