Fake doctor locked up over £15k scam on his ‘fiancee’

Dirty John-style con: Mohamad Yousef PICTURE: SWNS

A CONMAN who posed as a doctor on a dating website to scam a woman out of cash — just like in the Netflix TV series Dirty John — has been jailed.

Mohamad Yousef used a picture of himself wearing hospital scrubs on his profile to convince the victim he was a doctor when they met in May 2017.

Within a month they were engaged and Yousef told the woman to take out a £15,000 loan and give him £800 to book the Dorchester Hotel, in central London, as their wedding venue.

Once he had the money the mini-cab controller went missing and could not be contacted. The 30-year-old victim called the hospital where he said he worked but staff had no knowledge of him. She also contacted the Dorchester but no booking had been made. Yousef was arrested at Heathrow in September 2017. He claimed he had spent £8,000 of the cash on medical treatment for his father and said his dating profile picture was taken while doing voluntary work for Oxfam.

The 37-year-old, of Tottenham, north London, was jailed for 18 months this week after admitting fraud at Wood Green crown court.

In Dirty John — based on a true story — John Meehan, played by Eric Bana, pretends to be an anaesthetist to con wealthy women.

After the case Det Sgt Milan Pandya said: ‘Victims should absolutely not be embarrassed. These unscrupulous people are convincing and tenacious. Please don’t hesitate to contact police if you’ve been a victim of this crime.’
