PRINCE ANDREW only visited convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein in New York in 2010 to tell him they could no longer be friends, a report has claimed.
The Duke of York’s personal life and links to the disgraced billionaire have come under intense scrutiny since Epstein, 66, was found hanged in a prison cell in August after being charged with child sex-trafficking offences.
However, a source close to the duke claims he was unaware of Epstein’s dark side, which he kept hidden from his ‘trophy friend’, in spite of having served almost 13 months after pleading guilty to procuring for prostitution a girl under the age of 18.
It was after Epstein’s release from jail that Prince Andrew flew out to see him in New York.
‘The duke has been hammered for one mistake, which took place in 2010,’ the source told The Sunday Times. ‘He has apologised again and again for the error of judgment. But what he did wasn’t criminal. It was a mistake. He went to see a friend to tell them he couldn’t be their friend any more.’
Prince Andrew, 59, denies any wrongdoing.
