Dua Lipa: I didn’t think I was cool enough for Mercury Prize list

Big Lipa forward: London-born Dua

DUA LIPA says she was stunned to be nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize because she didn’t think she was ‘cool enough’.

The singer, 24, will go up against Stormzy for her acclaimed disco-inspired album Future Nostalgia in the hope of joining past winners Skepta, Alt-J and last year’s champion Dave.

As the 12-strong shortlist was announced on Lauren Laverne’s BBC Radio 6 show, London-born Dua joked: ‘It’s kind of surreal because maybe I just didn’t think I was cool enough. I’m so excited to have been shortlisted…’

Other nominees include Laura Marling and Michael Kiwanuka, plus indie rock band Sports Team with their debut album, Deep Down Happy. Frontman Alex Rice said: ‘You hear the dynamic between all of us in it and I think that’s what people want.’

The winner will be announced on September 24.
