A DRIVER who abandoned a former ambulance on a level crossing after a 37-mile police chase ‘could have caused untold carnage’, officers said.

Police released footage of Shane Hughes running from the decommissioned vehicle, which came within inches of a speeding train.

Hughes, from Halifax, was jailed for 22 months by Bradford crown court. The judge said it was the worst such case he had ever seen.

A police dashcam video shows Hughes (pictured) crashing through the barriers in Kildwick, North Yorkshire, in July before running away.

Officers then try to warn the driver of a train approaching at 70mph — but it speeds through, narrowly missing the ambulance. Hughes admitted driving offences and theft.
