PRESIDENT Trump’s secretary of state has admitted he did not want to take the job — until his wife told him it was the will of God.
The Former Exxon Mobile boss, Rex Tillerson, has said he had never met Donald Trump before last year’s election and was ‘stunned’ when the tycoon asked him to serve in his cabinet.
‘I didn’t want this job. I didn’t seek this job… I was supposed to retire in March, this month. I was going to go to the ranch to be with my grandkids,’ he told the Independent Journal Review.
Mr Tillerson said when he told his wife Renda St Clair, she pointed her finger at him and said: ‘I told you God’s not through with you.’
The 64-year-old added: ‘My wife told me I’m supposed to do this.’
Mr Tillerson, who has never served in public office before, also appealed for the American public and media to give him time in the role.
He said: ‘I would hope that people can maintain their patience in these early days and recognise I’ve only been at it six weeks.’ It comes after Mr Tillerson reportedly alarmed US allies when it was announced he would skip a planned meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Belgium next month, again raising questions over the White House’s support for the military alliance.
Sources yesterday said Nato officials were now working to re-arrange the date. Mr Tillerson had been due to travel to Russia shortly after the planned meeting in early April.
The secretary of state was also recently criticised for flying to a meeting with the Chinese government in Beijing without taking a press pool of reporters.
