Defiant Gazza ‘pleased’ as sex charge is made public

‘Peck on cheek’: Paul Gascoigne

PAUL GASCOIGNE defended himself on Twitter after being charged yesterday with sexual assault — insisting he had only given a woman a peck on the cheek to comfort her.

The England football legend said hearing the woman being called a ‘fat cow’ on a train had triggered memories of being teased about his weight.

He also claimed police had asked for selfies and autographs when they came to discuss the case with him.

The 51-year-old said in an emotional message: ‘The truth is I sat on the train with my nephews & I heard some1 call a girl in front of me a fat cow.

‘So I got upset & sat next 2 her & said don’t worry sweetheart your beautiful inside & out i pecked her & said it’s ok I was called fat yrs ago.’

Gazza, who was arrested at Durham station on August 20, has been charged

with sexual assault by touching. But in his hastily deleted tweets he insisted he had done ‘f*** all wrong’ on the train from York. He added: ‘I’m so pleased it’s eventually come out.

‘As u know ive been charged with a sexual assault from 4 mths ago plus the police who charged me asked me for selfies & an autograph? Why if I did wrong ok I’m sticking up 4 myself my manager SHANE said say nothing leave it 2 the lawyers no I’m my own lawyer.’

Agent Shane Whitfield said Gazza, who has battled booze and mental health problems, ‘totally denies’ the charge.

British Transport Police said no officers asked for a selfie or autograph.
