Dead man’s abuse conviction annulled

THE child sex abuse conviction of a former school worker found guilty following his suicide during the trial has been overturned by judges.

Darren Turk, 54, hanged himself last June while on trial for offences at Frewen College in Northiam, East Sussex.

After his death a jury at Lewes Crown Court found him guilty of ten charges, in what is believed to be the first time a dead man has been convicted of a crime in England. The court of appeal yesterday annulled the convictions on a point of law, that a defendant’s death brings prosecution to an end.
