A FITNESS instructor ‘assaulted, abused and ultimately murdered’ his 18-month-old adopted daughter, a court has heard.
Matthew Scully-Hicks is accused of ‘a course of violent conduct’ towards ‘defenceless’ Elsie Scully-Hicks ending in her death two weeks after being formally adopted by him and his husband Craig Scully-Hicks.
Elsie was unresponsive when paramedics were called to the family’s home in Cardiff in May 2016, the city’s crown court heard.
Scully-Hicks told an operator: ‘I was just changing my daughter for bed and she went all floppy and limp.’ Elsie died in hospital four days later after suffering bleeding on both sides of her brain. A post-mortem examination revealed she had also suffered several broken ribs, a fractured left thigh bone and skull.
Prosecutor Paul Lewis QC said Scully-Hicks gave up full-time work to care for Elsie while his husband continued as a company director.
He listed occasions Elsie suffered injuries, including an incident in March 2016 when Scully-Hicks said the baby gate had opened and Elsie ‘tumbled down the stairs’.
The 31-year-old denies murder. The trial continues.
