A MINISTER appointed by French president Emmanuel Macron to slash public spending held taxpayer-funded private dinners for friends where they guzzled £500 bottles of wine, it was claimed.

Astonishing details of Francois de Rugy’s high living were published by the Mediapart news site and led to immediate calls for his resignation.

The 45-year-old moved into the Hotel de Lassy in Paris when Mr Macron appointed him president of the National Assembly in 2017.

He and his wife, society journalist Severine de Rugy, regularly spent thousands of euros entertaining there.

Last night former minister Delphine Batho said: ‘He has to resign — public money is not there for sumptuous private dinners.’

Aides for Mr de Rugy said the ‘informal dinners related to the exercise of his duties’.
