A COUPLE who have been married for 61 years were discharged from hospital on the same day after beating coronavirus together.

Staff at Leicester Royal Infirmary lined up to bid farewell to Gillian England, 88, and her 91-year-old husband Michael, who had spent three weeks there.

Ward sister Laura Lomas said Mr England would get dressed each morning so he could walk to his wife’s bedside while exercising.

The pair would then hold hands and have a cup of tea. Staff also made sure they had meals together.

Ward of honour: Staff say goodbye

Speaking after they were allowed to return to their Leicester home on Friday, Mr England said: ‘I want to get better so I can look after my wife — first and foremost, I want to be there for Gillian. Being discharged on the same day is even more special as we have been on our recovery journey together.’

The couple, who have three sons, thanked medical staff for their ‘outstanding’ care and compassion. Mr England added: ‘Kindness goes such a long way.’
