Nurse ‘sick after second jab vetoed’

AN A&E nurse who was given a Pfizer jab has tested positive for Covid after his second vaccine dose was postponed. David Longden, who works at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, south Wales, had his first dose on December 8 and was due to have another on January 5. But it was scrapped due to a change of guidance and he tested positive on January 8. The 43-year-old, who is now self-isolating, said: ‘The government needs to protect their front-line NHS staff. To not do so is just short-sighted.’

THE Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is being considered by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for rolling out across the EU. The EMA announced yesterday that AstraZeneca and Oxford university have applied for approval of the Covid vaccine to be fast-tracked, and this could happen by January 29 ‘provided that data submitted on the quality, safety and efficacy of the vaccine are sufficiently robust and complete’.

Basim Shaikh, 76, died at home in Kensington, west London, after the hospital death of wife Sue, 75. ‘They were inseparable, and wouldn’t have been able to live without each other,’ daughter Caroline, 43, said. The couple met at Birmingham university and for decades lived in Barnt Green, Worcestershire, before moving to be nearer their two children.
