A VIDEO that appears to show police shooting a black man in the back as he leans into a car drew hundreds of protesters on to the streets in the US state of Wisconsin.
Riot officers fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators after footage on social media showed three officers shouting and pointing their guns at Jacob Blake as he walked around the front of a parked SUV in the city of Kenosha.
As Mr Blake opened the driver’s side door and leaned inside, an officer was seen grabbing his shirt from behind and shooting into the vehicle.
Seven shots could be heard on the video, though it was unclear if more than one officer fired their gun.
Mr Blake was taken to hospital, where he was in a serious condition. Police did not say what led to the shooting at about 5pm on Sunday.
By Sunday night, cars were set on fire and windows smashed as crowds faced off with police. Some chanted ‘no justice, no peace’, while others appeared to throw objects at officers.
Wisconsin governor Tony Evers condemned the shooting. He said: ‘While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is he is not the first black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.’ The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is investigating the shooting, said the officers involved had been placed on administrative leave.
