A 100-year-old company makes the best chocolate ice cream in Britain — bar none.
The Kingstonian Ice Cream company has reclaimed the prize it has won for three out of the past four years at the National Ice Cream Competition.
Enrico Mastrocola, who runs the firm in Kingston, south-west London, with his 85-year-old father Derrick, said their success is down to using natural ingredients and a love of making customers happy.
The 57-year-old said: ‘We’ve been around for 100 years. My great-grandfather started the business in 1913 and we’ve been going ever since.
‘I really love what I do, I get to be creative in my job, making new flavours all the time. The joy of ice cream is that it makes people happy, and I see this in my customers’ faces, both young and old.’
Mr Mastrocola buys cocoa powder direct from Italy, makes the ice cream himself and then both he and his father sell from their vans around the Kingston area and in Richmond Park. ‘Customers come and take a tub, and we supply a few local shops,’ he said.
