CHELSEA have stepped in to try to land Benfica’s highly rated midfielder Gedson Fernandes (pictured) from under the noses of West Ham.
The Hammers have been holding talks with the Lisbon club and were thought to be closing on an 18-month loan move with an obligation to buy for £55million.
Chelsea have matched that offer for the Portuguese international, 20, according to Sky Sports, with the only difference being the percentage of games he would have to play to trigger the sale being less at West Ham.
It is likely the decision will ultimately lie with the player.
