Caught out! Cricketers play havoc with lockdown rules

Just not cricket: The players ignore social distancing for the game in Birmingham on Sunday PICTURES: SNAPPERSK

A GROUP of amateur cricketers were caught on camera flouting social distancing rules as they gathered for a match in Birmingham on Sunday.

Despite risking fines, the gang of about 30 men ignored the ban on all team sports to play in the shadow of HMP Birmingham.

And although players were often spread out across the ground, they were clearly not keeping the designated 2m apart when setting up equipment and putting their pads on. The government relaxed the guidelines on playing sport yesterday but the softer measures don’t mention team games such as cricket.

Meanwhile, a seaside town was ‘overwhelmed’ by daytrippers making the most of the sunshine.

Visitors ignoring restrictions flocked to the front at Southend-on-Sea as temperatures soared to 22C over the bank holiday weekend.
