Catch me, Kate!

Good to firm: Kate managing
to steady Sophie yesterday

SHE’S fallen at the first! Royal Ascot hadn’t even got under way yesterday when Prince Edward’s wife stumbled and almost landed in the Duchess of Cambridge’s lap.

Quick-thinking Kate, 35, reached up to catch Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as the 52-year-old fell forward while stepping out of their horse-drawn carriage — leaving both in fits of laughter.

Tote amazing: Kate’s quickfire catch

The opening day yesterday was also attended by the Queen, Prince Philip, Sophie’s husband Prince Edward and Prince William.

A quirky touch came from Bake Off chef Cherish Finden. She spent 100 hours creating a hat made from macaroons, commissioned by Coral bookmaker in honour of the Queen. Retro girl band The Tootsie Rollers brought vintage glamour to the occasion.

Before the racing, a minute’s silence was held for victims and survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire and the London and Manchester terror attacks.
