FRENCH police have forcibly removed scores of pro-Catalan independence protesters who shut down a major border crossing with Spain.

Officers detained 18 people and chased off dozens more with pepper spray and batons before towing away vehicles and debris that had been used to block the La Jonquera crossing.

The A9-AP7 motorway connecting Perpignan with Barcelona is a major haulage route and the protest in the Pyrenees caused six-mile tailbacks.

It was organised by Tsunami Democratic, which has staged demonstrations since Catalan separatist leaders were convicted last month over a 2017 independence bid.

Protesters remained near the crossing yesterday with Catalan police helping to clear the Spanish side.
