TV PRESENTER Cat Deeley has been describing how the ‘fear’ of America’s gun culture prompted her family’s move back to the UK.
Her comedian husband Patrick Kielty had already been forced to take cover with one of their two sons during a shooter scare at an LA shopping mall.
Then, looking at schools Stateside, she found herself asking what would happen if a gunman got into the building.
Cat, 43, who has hosted shows such as So You Think You Can Dance? during her 14 years on US TV, has Milo, four, and two-year-old James with Kielty.
Explaining their decision to leave, she said: ‘Fear was a part of this. There was a moment when I was with a friend looking at potential schools for Milo and we had to ask the question nobody wants to, “What do you do if there is a live shooter on the premises?”
‘They tell you exactly what would happen, whether the kids would go to a safe room or hide under the desks, and you go… the danger suddenly becomes a reality.’
She told how Kielty, 49, was left ‘shaking’ last summer when he phoned asking her to pick him up after he and Milo were led to safety during the mall shooting drama.
‘He wanted to keep Milo calm, so I didn’t understand the enormity of what was happening,’ said Cat. ‘As I was driving I began to see helicopters, news vans, firemen and Swat squads. It was terrifying.’
