COLOMBIA’S capital Bogota has made history by electing its first lesbian mayor.
Claudia Lopez, 49, has become the first openly lesbian mayor of a capital city in Latin America, polling 35 per cent of the vote.
The win by the centre-left candidate is being hailed as a major advance in a region where the LGBT community faces inequality.
‘This is the day of the woman,’ the ex-journalist told crowds. ‘We knew that only by uniting could we win. We did that. We united, we won and we made history!’
She vowed to continue uniting Colombians across the political spectrum and work to improve issues such as public transportation.
